Friends,
I spent the last week racking my brain for the topic of this week's newsletter. I kept coming up empty, but this morning, the perfect inspiration came in the form of rain, mud, and spring leaves sprouting from the bush outside my window.
In Taoism and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the season of Spring is associated with the element of wood (think strong, yet flexible and expansive). It is also the season of the liver and gallbladder, responsible for the balanced flow of energy through the body, among other things. The element of wood is also associated with the desire for purpose as well as a path of action to reach that purpose.
Whether you are into the concept of energies or not, observing the change of seasons and working with them can feel incredibly supportive. Spring ushers us out of a long, cold winter. For those of us with seasonal depression, Spring can feel like an awakening of things lost during the dark months. A completely chemical experience can feel mystical because of the power it has over our well-being and state of mind. It is a time of throwing open the windows and doors to clean out the dust of winter. A time to tend garden beds and put the houseplants out for some much-needed nutrients that only the rain can provide. With the return of the sun, we see the return of serotonin and perhaps the desire to burst forth into doing, much like the flowers and critters coming out of their deep winter sleep around us.
Now is a great time to set goals or take stock of the world you’re living in. How are you feeling? Who are you spending time with (or not)? How are you spending your time? How do you want to spend your time? Is your environment supporting your needs as-is or do you need to make some adjustments?
As always, I love hearing from you. Feel free to share your thoughts with me.
xoxo,
Lashonda
